Objectives:
The development of the Integrated Livelihoods Diversification Strategy for the GLTFCA is in support of the 3 of the key objectives of the GLTP Treaty. These are as follows: (1) Promote alliances in the management of biological natural resources by encouraging socio, economic, and other partnerships among the parties including private sector, local communities and Non-government Organisations; (2) Facilitate the establishment and maintenance of a sustainable sub-regional economic base through appropriate development frameworks, strategies and work plans; and (3) Develop trans-border ecotourism as a means of fostering regional socio-economic development and more resilient economic activity.

The JMB has developed an Integrated Livelihoods Diversification Strategy with the support of the then USAID funded RESILIM (Resilience in the Limpopo River Basin Program) Programme and PPF. The main outputs of the Strategy development process included the following:

  1. A comprehensive database of community-based natural resource management projects within the GLTFCA area;
  2. An understanding of current workable and appropriate livelihood models within the project area;
  3. Identification of other potential workable and appropriate livelihood models that could be applied to the area;
  4. Understanding of the impact of climate change through the development of resilient livelihood models;
  5. Application of scenario planning as a tool to evaluate various livelihood models and strategies and the impact of climate change on them;
  6. Optimisation of social development opportunities within and adjacent to the GLTFCA; and
  7. Addressing the issues of regional integration & benefit sharing within the broader GLTFCA.
