Africa's Travel Indaba 2026 provided another important milestone in advancing Southern Africa's vision of positioning its Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) as world-class, cross-border tourism destinations. Supported by the German Government and the European Union and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Boundless Southern Africa (BSA) initiative and partners came together to showcase the region's unique conservation landscapes while strengthening the partnerships needed to drive sustainable tourism, biodiversity conservation and inclusive economic development.

Held in Durban, South Africa, from 12–14 May 2026, the exhibition brought together tourism authorities, destination management organisations, tour operators, accommodation providers, investors and international buyers from across the world. For Boundless Southern Africa, the event offered far more than a marketing platform, it created opportunities to build strategic relationships, raise awareness of Southern Africa's shared natural heritage and reinforce the value of regional collaboration.

Throughout the BSA exhibition, representatives from the SADC Secretariat and SADC Tourism Working Groups, the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) TFCA Secretariat, GIZ, the Southern African Tourism Alliance (SATA) and tourism stakeholders from across the region engaged with public and private sector partners to promote the exceptional tourism experiences found within SADC TFCAs. The engagements highlighted how cross-border tourism could encourage visitors to explore multiple countries in a single journey, creating longer visitor stays and wider economic benefits for communities living within and around these shared conservation landscapes.

The mission strengthened collaboration between National Tourism Organisations, SADC Member States and tourism industry partners, reaffirming a collective commitment to promoting Southern Africa as one interconnected destination rather than a collection of individual countries. This regional approach reflected the vision of Boundless Southern Africa, to inspire seamless travel across borders while supporting conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

The discussions held during Africa's Travel Indaba also generated valuable insights into the evolving tourism market. While there remained strong international demand for luxury and high-end travel experiences, the engagements demonstrated that many of Southern Africa's Transfrontier Conservation Areas were still relatively unknown to global travel buyers. This highlighted a significant opportunity to strengthen destination branding and increase awareness of the remarkable wildlife, landscapes and cultural experiences available across the region's shared conservation areas.

Importantly, the mission reinforced that successful destination marketing extends beyond promoting places, it requires compelling stories, strong partnerships and practical tourism products that make cross-border travel easy to understand and sell. The need for dedicated TFCA tourism itineraries emerged as a key opportunity to better connect travel buyers with the diverse experiences available throughout the region. Well-designed itineraries would not only strengthen the visibility of TFCAs but also encourage visitors to discover lesser-known destinations, spreading tourism benefits more equitably across Southern Africa.

Africa's Travel Indaba also demonstrated the value of sustained engagement with both government and industry stakeholders. Careful planning, targeted meetings and active participation throughout the event enabled Boundless Southern Africa to strengthen existing relationships while establishing new partnerships that would support future destination development and regional marketing initiatives.

The mission reaffirmed that collaboration remained central to unlocking the full potential of SADC TFCAs. By bringing together conservation organisations, tourism authorities, governments and the private sector under a shared regional identity, Boundless Southern Africa continued to strengthen the foundations for a more connected, competitive and sustainable tourism sector.

Looking ahead, the lessons from Africa's Travel Indaba 2026 would inform future promotional efforts, including the development of market-ready TFCA tourism itineraries and increased participation in strategically selected travel trade platforms capable of reaching new audiences.

As Southern Africa continued to promote its shared conservation landscapes through the Boundless Southern Africa initiative, every partnership established and every conversation held contributed towards a larger vision, one where tourism supported biodiversity conservation, strengthened regional integration and created meaningful opportunities for communities across the region's TFCAs.
