Veterinary Support for Herding-Based Livestock Management in Botswana

Organisation: WWF
Sector: Health
Location:Eastern Okavango Panhandle, Ngamiland, Botswana, Botswana
Closing date: 25 July 2025
The Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) is Africa’s largest terrestrial conservation landscape, spanning five countries and home to some of the world’s most iconic wildlife. Balancing wildlife conservation with livestock management is key to ensuring ecological connectivity and sustainable livelihoods. To advance this vision, KAZA partners are implementing innovative herder-based livestock management interventions in Botswana’s eastern Okavango Panhandle. These interventions are critical to enabling the removal of veterinary fences—restoring wildlife movement corridors while safeguarding livestock health and market access through Commodity-Based Trade (CBT) approaches. We seek a highly experienced and dedicated Botswanan registered Veterinarian Consultant to provide technical leadership, field-based support, and stakeholder coordination for this groundbreaking initiative.
Your Role
As the Veterinary Consultant, you will:

• Provide expert animal health management support at the wildlife-livestock interface.
• Train and mentor herder teams, NGO partners (CLAWS, REHerd Africa), and Government Veterinary Services (DVS) staff.
• Lead liaison efforts between communities, DVS, and conservation partners to ensure effective disease risk mitigation.
• Support research, monitoring, and outreach activities to enhance understanding and uptake of the REHerd Model and CBT approaches.

Key Responsibilities
• Facilitate coordination between DVS, CLAWS, REHerd Africa, and local farmers.
• Engage closely with the KAZA Animal Health Sub Working Group and AHEAD (Animal & Human Health for the Environment and Development) initiative.
• Deliver technical and clinical training for herder teams and community outreach programs.
• Supervise animal health interventions (vaccinations, treatments, surveillance).
• Contribute to data collection, reporting, and adaptive management of veterinary strategies.
• Promote community awareness of wildlife-livestock coexistence and the benefits of CBT.
• Provide technical reports and participate in regular project team meetings.

Required Qualifications & Experience
• Veterinary degree (BVSc/BVM) with active registration in Botswana (wildlife certification required).
• Postgraduate qualification in veterinary science or related field (preferred).
• 10+ years of experience in wildlife-livestock disease management in Botswana.
• Deep understanding of veterinary policies, control measures, and CBT frameworks.
• Proven ability to engage with local farmers, Traditional Authorities, and government agencies.
• Experience in delivering field-based support in remote and challenging environments.
• Strong data reporting, facilitation, and collaboration skills.

Deliverables
• Deployed on-site in Seronga by 30 September 2025.
• Monthly progress updates and biannual technical/financial reports (Dec 2025, June 2026).
• Participation in virtual implementation meetings with consortium partners.
